OBITUARY
Frank M. Davis, general manager of our research and engineering division, died of coronary thrombosis☆ early in the morning of February 4th. His sudden going is a grave loss to a wide circle of friends and associates.
Frank Davis was born February 13, 1912 at Monett Missouri, where he passed his boyhood and attended grade school, high school and junior college. He then obtained his engineering education at the University of Arkansas. As a student, he constantly among the scholastic leaders. He was elected president of both Tau Beta Pi, honorary engineering fraternity, and Pi Mu Epsilon, honorary mathematics fraternity. He also excelled in extra-curricular activities, such as painting, music amateur radio and amateur photography. He was graduated in 1934 from Arkansas with BSEE degree, and shortly joined the Collins organization.
From the beginning Frank demonstrated not only rare ability as an engineer in his chosen field, but also a professional impatience with anything less than the best that he could accomplish. He was soon put in full charge of the design and development of speech equipment, where he displayed the executive ability and qualities of leadership which led first to appointment to the management of all engineering. In 1943, he was named General Manager of the Research and Engineering Division, and at the annual meeting in 1945 was made a member of the Board of Directors.
Before and during the war, Frank Davis became widely regarded by technical and supply divisions of the War and Navy Departments of the United States Government as one of the ablest engineering executives in the radio communications industry.
Within the Collins organization, Frank was universally admired and respected,, and his leadership was unquestioned. His friendly helpfulness was untiring and won for him the cooperation of all with whom he dealt.
He was a member of the American Engineers and of the Acoustical Society of America. He was also a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, and a charter member and the first chairman of its Cedar Rapids Section.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, their two sons, Brian Matthews and James Franklin, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will M. Davis of Monett Missouri. To them the Column expresses the sympathies of every member of the organization of which Frank was so inspiring and esteemed a part.
